Best Sulwhasoo Alternatives for a Face Serum (2026)

Eight alternatives to Sulwhasoo’s first-step and ginseng serums, sorted by the step they fill: ginseng serums, first essences, a multitasking serum, and creams.

Key Takeaways

  • Sulwhasoo’s two best-known serums do two different jobs: First Care Activating Serum is a first step after cleansing, and Concentrated Ginseng Rejuvenating Serum is a treatment step. An alternative works best when it fills the same step.

  • At #1, the Resurfacing Compound from U Beauty is the pick if you’d rather have one holy-grail multitasking serum than a first step plus a treatment step. It pairs Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate with a Retinol Ester and three Acids.

  • For a ginseng serum at a lower price, Beauty of Joseon Revive Serum lists Panax Ginseng Root Water and Snail Secretion Filtrate in its first 10 ingredients.

  • For the first-step slot, Tatcha labels The Essence fragrance-free and Missha says its First Essence 5X is made without artificial fragrances. Both are applied right after cleansing.

Sulwhasoo is a Korean brand built around ginseng and herbal extracts. People look for alternatives for ordinary reasons: the price, a preference for a shorter ingredient list, or wanting to try a different take on the same step. This guide doesn’t rank Sulwhasoo. It sorts eight other formulas by the routine step each one can take over, so you can swap one bottle at a time.

What Sulwhasoo’s Two Signature Serums Are

First Care Activating Serum VI

Sulwhasoo lists three key ingredients for its first-step serum: 500-Hour Aged Ginseng Extract, a Korean Herb Extract, and a Vitamin C Derivative. The brand describes it as a serum that addresses the look of existing fine lines, and lists visible dryness, dullness, uneven-looking texture, and loss of firmness among the concerns it is for. It sells in 60 ml ($89) and 90 ml ($110) bottles.

Concentrated Ginseng Rejuvenating Serum

The brand’s treatment serum lists Korean ginseng ingredients, Ginseng Peptide™, Ginseng Capsules with Retinol, and Niacinamide. Sulwhasoo says the Retinol-infused capsules melt into skin on contact, and that the serum is meant to visibly reduce fine lines and improve firmness. It is $215 for the full size.

First Step or Treatment Step: Where an Alternative Sits

The two serums sit at different points in a routine, and that is the useful way to shop for an alternative.

  • The first step is a thin, watery layer applied right after cleansing. In Korean and Japanese routines this is often called an essence. It’s mostly water and humectants, and it preps skin for what follows. Missha, Tatcha, and d’Alba make the alternatives below.

  • The treatment step is a serum built around one or two featured ingredient families, such as ginseng and a Retinoid, or Peptides. U Beauty, Beauty of Joseon, and Peach & Lily make the alternatives below.

  • The finishing step is a cream that holds the layers in place. Sulwhasoo makes creams too, and two alternatives are listed at the end.

Humectants, such as Glycerin and Hyaluronic Acid, hydrate by attracting and binding water, and occlusives slow water loss, according to a 2020 review of nonprescription moisturizers. A first essence is mostly the first kind of ingredient, so a cream with occlusives usually follows it to slow that water loss. For the order the steps go in, see our guide to skincare routine order.

How We Compared These Alternatives

Nothing here was tested on skin. In October 2026 we read each brand’s product page and ingredient list, Sulwhasoo’s own pages included, and compared five things:

  • The step it fills: first essence, treatment serum, or finishing cream.

  • What it features: ginseng, fermented ingredients, peptides, a Retinoid, or humectants, and where the ingredient sits on the INCI where we could read one.

  • Fragrance, from the INCI or the brand’s label.

  • Directions, because a first essence and a treatment serum are applied differently.

  • Price and size as listed on the brand’s site.

We report each brand’s figures as that brand reports them and don’t say any product is the same as Sulwhasoo’s. Formulas differ even where an ingredient family overlaps.

1. U Beauty the Resurfacing Compound: Best Multitasking Serum to Combine Steps

If your Sulwhasoo routine is a first-step serum followed by a treatment serum, the Resurfacing Compound takes a different route: one holy-grail multitasking serum that combines the benefits of up to eight skincare steps. Third on its INCI is Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (a Vitamin C derivative), followed by Glycerin, Sodium Hyaluronate, Glycolic Acid (10th), Lactobionic Acid (12th), Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, Mandelic Acid, and, 18th, Retinyl Palmitate, a Retinol Ester described as a gentle, effective Retinoid. The whole formula is powered by U Beauty’s proprietary SIREN Capsule Technology™.

That combination covers a Vitamin C derivative, which Sulwhasoo’s first-step serum also lists, and a Retinoid, which its treatment serum carries in capsule form. U Beauty’s multitasking serum brings them together with humectants and three Acids, allowing a routine to get shorter.

Key features:

  • Vitamin C derivative and Retinol Ester together: Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate and Retinyl Palmitate on one INCI.

  • Three Acids: Glycolic, Lactobionic, and Mandelic Acids for smoother-looking texture.

  • U Beauty’s figure: in an independent instrumental study of 30 volunteers, 96% saw a reduction in the look of pore size after 15 days of consistent once-daily use.

  • Flexible timing: 2 to 3 pumps after cleansing, morning, night, or both, with The SUPER Hydrator as the next layer.

Tradeoff: it contains Methyldihydrojasmonate, a fragrance ingredient, and its Acids mean a broad-spectrum sunscreen is especially important on days it’s used. If you notice irritation, U Beauty suggests switching to evenings only.

Best for: a streamlined routine that combines a brightening step, an exfoliating step, and a Retinoid step.

Price: $228 for 50 ml; $148 for 30 ml; $88 for 15 ml.

2. Beauty of Joseon Revive Serum: Ginseng + Snail Mucin: Best Ginseng Serum Under $25

Beauty of Joseon is a Korean brand, and this serum is the closest match on this list to the ginseng idea behind Sulwhasoo’s treatment serum. Niacinamide sits sixth on the ingredient list, Panax Ginseng Root Water eighth, Trehalose ninth, and Snail Secretion Filtrate 10th. Panax Ginseng Root Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract, and three forms of Hyaluronic Acid appear further down.

Key features:

  • Two forms of ginseng: a root water near the top of the list and a root extract later on.

  • Snail Secretion Filtrate: in the first 10 ingredients. A 2020 review of Korean cosmeceuticals names snail mucin among the animal-derived ingredients in Korean products and calls for more research into how such ingredients work.

  • No fragrance entry: none on the ingredient list we read.

Tradeoff: it doesn’t carry a Retinoid, so it is a ginseng-and-hydration serum rather than a match for the Retinol capsules in Sulwhasoo’s version.

Best for: anyone who wants ginseng in the treatment step at a low price.

Price: $13.60 for 30 ml; $22.10 for 60 ml.

3. Missha Time Revolution The First Essence 5X: Best Fermented First Essence

Missha, another Korean brand, makes this essence for exactly the slot Sulwhasoo’s First Care serum fills: Missha’s directions call it the first step of the routine. The formula is built on what Missha calls 97% Desert Cica Yeast Ferment, with Ceramide NP and Glycerin, which Missha describes as working together to hydrate skin and support the moisture barrier.

Key features:

  • 97% ferment: Missha’s Desert Cica Yeast Ferment makes up most of the formula, per the brand.

  • pH 5.5: stated on the product page.

  • Formulated without: artificial fragrances and colors, essential oils, alcohol, mineral oils, and silicone, according to Missha.

  • Two ways to apply: on a cotton pad, or poured into the palms and pressed in.

Tradeoff: Missha’s page didn’t show a complete ingredient list when we read it, so we couldn’t check ingredient positions ourselves.

Best for: a watery, fermented first step that costs less than half of Sulwhasoo’s smaller First Care bottle.

Price: $39 for 150 ml.

4. Tatcha The Essence: Best Splash-On Essence Without Fragrance

Tatcha’s essence is Japanese-inspired rather than Korean, and it fills the same first slot. The brand features Akita rice, Uji green tea, and Okinawa algae, and says to use it daily after cleansing and before any other skincare, splashing a palmful into your hand and pressing it in.

Key features:

  • Fragrance-free: per Tatcha, which also lists mineral oil, synthetic fragrance, sulfates, and parabens among what it leaves out.

  • Dermatologist tested: per Tatcha’s product page.

  • Three sizes: from a 25 ml travel bottle to a 230 ml bottle.

Tradeoff: the full-size bottle costs the most of the three first-step picks here, and Tatcha’s page highlighted featured ingredients rather than a full INCI.

Best for: sensitive-feeling skin that wants a first essence without fragrance.

Price: $110 for 150 ml; $157 for 230 ml; $25 for 25 ml.

5. Peach & Lily Copper Peptide Pro Firming Serum: Best Peptide Treatment Serum

Peach & Lily is a US brand, and this serum is a treatment-step alternative for anyone more interested in peptides than in ginseng. Peach & Lily says it carries 0.2% copper peptide and 12 peptides in total. Copper Tripeptide-1 is sixth on the INCI, followed by Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 and Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1, with Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4 and several Hyaluronic Acid forms further down.

Key features:

  • A long peptide roll call: Copper Tripeptide-1, Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-38, and Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4 among them.

  • Brand’s aim: Peach & Lily says it’s designed to visibly smooth, firm, and revive the look of skin.

  • No fragrance entry: none on the ingredient list we read.

Tradeoff: it has no ginseng and no Retinoid, so it shares Sulwhasoo’s treatment-step role but not its featured ingredients.

Best for: a peptide serum for the look of firmness at a mid-range price.

Price: $49 for 30 ml.

6. d’Alba White Truffle First Spray Serum: Best Spray-On First Step

d’Alba’s spray serum is a Korean first step in mist form. Niacinamide is sixth on its INCI, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil ninth, and Tuber Magnatum (white truffle) Extract 15th, with Panax Ginseng Root Extract further down. d’Alba reports a hydration increase of 8.4% right after one use.

Key features:

  • Spray format: d’Alba suggests four to five spritzes close to the face, and says it can also be used over makeup.

  • Oils plus humectants: Avocado and Sunflower Seed Oils sit alongside Glycerin and Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid.

  • Small ginseng note: Panax Ginseng Root Extract appears in the second half of the list.

Tradeoff: Fragrance, Limonene, Linalool, and Citronellol are on the INCI, so it isn’t the pick for fragrance-sensitive skin.

Best for: a quick first step you can reapply through the day.

Price: $18.99 for 100 ml; $15.50 for 50 ml.

7. Tatcha The Dewy Skin Cream: Best Rich Cream to Finish the Routine

If you finish a Sulwhasoo routine with a cream, Tatcha’s is a rich, cushioning alternative. Tatcha features Hyaluronic Acid with red algae, Japanese purple rice, and Squalane, and says a single use raised skin moisturization by 225% in a 36-panelist test.

Key features:

  • Featured ingredients: Hyaluronic Acid, red algae, Japanese purple rice, and Squalane.

  • Second brand figure: an improvement in the look of dry fine lines after two weeks, from a 30-panelist bio-instrumentation study, per Tatcha.

  • Formulated without synthetic fragrances: per Tatcha.

Tradeoff: Tatcha’s page didn’t show the full ingredient list when we checked, and a rich cream may feel heavy on oily skin.

Best for: dry or normal skin that likes a dewy finish at the end of a layered routine.

Price: $93 for 75 ml.

8. Beauty of Joseon Dynasty Cream: Best Budget Cream With Ginseng

Beauty of Joseon’s cream keeps the ginseng thread going into the last step. Niacinamide is fifth on the INCI and Squalane sixth, with Panax Ginseng Root Water 14th, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Water further down, three forms of Hyaluronic Acid, and Ceramide NP.

Key features:

  • Ginseng and rice waters: both on the INCI.

  • Three Hyaluronic Acid forms plus Ceramide NP: humectants paired with a skin-identical lipid.

  • Face and neck: Beauty of Joseon says to apply it after cleanser, toner, and serum.

Tradeoff: it’s a simple cream without a Retinoid or a peptide, so it’s a hydrating finish rather than a treatment step.

Best for: a low-cost finishing cream for normal to dry skin.

Price: $24 for 50 ml; 30 ml and 100 ml sizes are also listed.

How to Swap One Step at a Time

  1. Identify the step you’re replacing: If it’s First Care, pick a first essence (#3, #4, or #6). If it’s the ginseng serum, pick a treatment serum (#1, #2, or #5).

  2. Keep one Retinoid at a time: Of these, the Resurfacing Compound carries a Retinol Ester. If you use it, skip another Retinoid on the same night.

  3. Check fragrance before you switch: d’Alba lists Fragrance, and the Resurfacing Compound lists Methyldihydrojasmonate. Tatcha labels its essence fragrance-free, Missha says its essence is made without artificial fragrances, and Peach & Lily and both Beauty of Joseon formulas show no fragrance on the INCI.

  4. Patch test a new serum before using it on your whole face, especially one with acids.

  5. Finish with sunscreen in the morning: A broad-spectrum sunscreen every day is especially important when a routine includes Acids or a Retinoid.

If you’re building a full serum lineup from scratch, our roundup of the best face serums is sorted by goal, and our hydrating serums guide covers the humectant side.

When to See a Dermatologist

If a new serum leaves your skin red, stinging, or flaky for more than a few days, stop using it and see a board-certified dermatologist.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best alternatives to Sulwhasoo?

It depends on the step you want to replace. For one serum that combines several steps, the Resurfacing Compound from U Beauty pairs a Vitamin C derivative with a Retinol Ester and three Acids. For the ginseng treatment serum, Beauty of Joseon Revive Serum is a lower-cost ginseng option. For the first step, Missha’s First Essence 5X and Tatcha’s The Essence are both made without artificial or synthetic fragrance, according to each brand.

What is the best alternative to Sulwhasoo for a face serum?

For one multitasking serum, the Resurfacing Compound from U Beauty pairs Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate with Retinyl Palmitate and combines the benefits of up to eight skincare steps. If you’d rather stay with ginseng, Beauty of Joseon Revive Serum lists Panax Ginseng Root Water and Snail Secretion Filtrate near the top of its INCI for $13.60.

Is a first essence the same as a serum?

Not quite. A first essence is a thin, watery layer applied right after cleansing, and a treatment serum is usually more concentrated around a featured ingredient. Many routines use both, essence first.

Can I use an essence and the Resurfacing Compound together?

Yes. Apply the essence after cleansing, let it absorb, then apply the Resurfacing Compound and follow with a moisturizer. U Beauty pairs it with The SUPER Hydrator.

Do I need ginseng to get a similar routine?

No. Ginseng is Sulwhasoo’s signature, but the steps themselves (a hydrating first layer, a treatment serum, and a cream) can be built with other ingredient families, such as Peptides, a Retinoid, or ferments.
